I LOVE HIM

Episode 13

Mike’s side of the story

Life in the prison was something else. My first day in prison was full of uncertain expectations. I wasn’t certain of what I was expecting to see or experience there. What I saw in prison was hell. It was a complete no man’s land where everyone was practically on their own. Life was very unbearable for me. My cellmate didn’t make life any easy in the first 7 weeks of my stay in the prison. He would either beat me or ask me to stay awake the whole night and make sure mosquito doesn’t bite him. He was one of the feared guys in the prison, hugely built with so many scares on his body.

However, with time, he started liking me. Maybe because I was very obedient to him. I didn’t argue with him for once. He introduced me to his men in the prison yard as his “PA: Personal assistance” and no longer as the little rat. With his help, I could get to people outside the prison, if I had enough money, I would have been running a good business anywhere in the country from inside the prison. I must confess that, Dagbo as he was fondly called had some huge connections outside the prison. He wasn’t actually living like someone in prison. He had so much to enjoy in prison. He was a boss there just like some other bosses in the prison. From my estimate, there were about a thousand inmates in the prison.

As the months and days went by, he introduced me to some of his businesses outside the prison. It was then that I realized that he was a very successful business man before he was sent to prison for an alleged rape. He narrated his ordeal to me, how he was framed by his secretary for rape. He suspected that his secretary was paid by an opposition company to frame him over a 200-million-naira contract, but he had no prove on that. The evidences laid against him was so overwhelming that nothing could say otherwise on the situation as at the time and he was jailed for it. He already served 6 years of his term but he still runs his business from inside the prison. He has piles of files in his cell which contains account details from his business. He later informed me on how he got those scares on his body. Some of the inmates were paid by someone to kill him but he got lucky after some terrible beating from the guys, someone who used to stay in one of the cells saved him with his own men. The guy in particular has been released and Dagbo rewarded him by keeping him in charge of his businesses.

Dagbo’s story was very touching. But looking at him from a far, you would think that he was a drug lord or a murderer or something of close proximity. I was learning so much from Dagbo. He taught me most of his business secrets and so many tips about growing a good business. But I still feared him because of what he did to me initially. He told me that he treated me that way because he doesn’t want to experience what he had experienced from those guys who still looks for ways to attack him. He only survived with the help of some other inmates whom he bought over to his side by helping each of their family members through his business aids. From the day Dagbo made me his Personal assistance, life became better for me in prison. If not for the feeling of freedom, I would have loved to remain in prison. The prison warders dose his bidings without questioning because of course, he fattens their pockets. They even bring in some ladies for us once in a while to help us with our urges. I wonder how life would have been for me if not for him. Someone of my nature that can’t go a week without a having a lady grace my bed. Staying without a woman for almost four months nearly took the life out of me. I never felt the same during those periods not until Dagbo came to my rescue. I felt so bad about how the situation has turned out between Frank and myself. I wished none of those things happened. But I couldn’t change history. The deed has already been done and I need to finish what I started.

Frank’s side of story

The threat from the letter I got scared me so much that I feared going to my shop. The D.P.O had already assured me that he will get to the root of the matter and with help from Cynthia’s dad, some policemen always come around on schedule to see how I was doing each day. It was little relieve for me too. I hated Mike so much for coming after my life.

Four months later, there was no threat and I was already beginning to forget what had happened. And in those four months, I was able to finish my software and was planning on how to start marketing it. Cynthia also provided me with a very good support in those periods. I posted so many applications to some companies with hope of signing a big deal with any of them.

On a very faithful day, I got a call from one those companies which was sutuated in Enugu. They had seen my pitch and a sample of my product and they were satisfied with it. I was very excited about that. My joy knew no bounds because I was going to sign a contract of over five million naira. An amount that I had never touched or seen in my life. I called and informed Cynthia of the development and we had a huge celebration over it. Finally, my life was going to turn around for good after all.

I made the necessary preparations in order to meet the company. I promised Cynthia that when I come back, we will start preparations for our marriage since she was going to graduate in two months’ time. Finally, I was going to have a happy ending after all.

I left for Enugu two days after I got the call from the company. Cynthia out of joy gave me one of her cars to travel with. I never knew what laid ahead for me on that day. I had just left Owerri when I a car made a sharp turn in front of my car. I hit the break so hard that my car skidded off the road. I thought they lost control of their vehicle. Luckily for me I wasn’t hurt. So, I came out to see if they were okay, only to be held and dragged into their vehicle at gun point. They blindfolded and drugged me. Within about three minutes time, I lost consciousness.
