I LOVE HIM
Frank’s side of the
story…
Immediately they left, two other guys came in and
gave me my mobile and placed a handkerchief on my nose and the earth was once
more, without void. I woke up seeing myself on top of a table around somewhere
in Douglas. “What happened to? Why am I here? I turned in panic”. Oh! Just
then, the incident came back to my head. Those guys were really mean. I picked
my phone from my pocket, checked the time and it was 8 minutes before eleven. I
rushed to the road and boarded a taxi that would take me to my residence in
Orji. I was still in the taxi when my phone rang. I looked at the contact only
to realize that it was an unknown number. I picked the call with doubting mind
thinking it was one of those guys that were calling since the number has no tag
on it. I inquired who the caller was and to my greatest surprise, it was
Cynthia, but I couldn’t express how surprised I was because the mess that I
just escaped from was still fresh in my memory. I told her to let me be. That I
was not in the right mood to talk to her. But, was that the right thing I
should have done? I waved the thought off my mind and switched off my phone. My
life was more important than that. I got home at exactly past eleven. I found
Mike sleeping soundly on the bed. Yes, we also stay together although he has
rented an apartment, but he doesn't want to move in yet. Maybe his mission in
my apartment is to desecrate my bed very well with his numerous girls. Until
the gods get annoyed with him, he wouldn't leave. Lols! I love seeing him
around because he does justice to my boredom. I decided not to share the
incident that happened the other day either with him or any other person. That
night, I didn't care for any food. I was very hungry after all, but I was
already messed up that day. I went straight to bed and within some minutes I
dozed off.
I woke up very late the following day, and it was
a Sunday. I said my prayers and got dressed for church. I was late for the 6 am
mass, so, I decided to attend that of 10 am. Mike has already left the house
before I woke up. He wasn’t the church type, so, I wasn't thinking that he had
gone to church. Maybe he had gone to play football or snooker which is his
normal routine. I checked out myself in the mirror. Wow! I looked dapper but
with a depressed face. I left the house when it was some minutes before ten. On
my way to church, I was still busy pondering on what transpired between the
kidnappers and I the other day. I got lost in my thoughts that I nearly got hit
by a cab. The driver shouted at and rendered insults on me before driving off.
"Hmmm! who cares?" I giggled. Hurriedly, I moved to the church to
avoid another scenario hastening my pace. You might call me a walkaholic, I
won't count that as an offence. My prayer point that day was for God to protect
me from those bad guys. I still have a long way to go and I can’t die for
something I knew nothing about. "Who is Cynthia kwanu?" I muttered.
On entering the church premises, every single human being looked like a suspect.
My steps were too awkward that little children exiting the premises after
children's mass even noticed the weird aura hovering all over me. "Uncle
Computer" Nuela who happened to be my neighbour's daughter called me from
behind. She is of course the only person that calls me that, maybe because I do
computer stuffs. Huh! She walked up to me and said "Uncle your face is
looking like that of Papa Risika". Damn! What!! Oh! No, did she just tell
me that? Someone should call 911 'cause am gonna commit murder. Hey joke apart
that man was pretty ugly. If there should be another election for the position
of the Devil, that man must surely be nominated. I never knew I looked that
bad. to worsen the matter, she added " And your gate is not closed, people
might see your curtain, you lucky that your thing is not showing" she
pointed down to my trouser zip while laughing. And that was the limit I could
take from an 11 year old kid. "Jeeez! did that your small witch of a
goddamn mother teach you that?" I shouted at her. She just ignored the
looks on my face and hugged me. She brought out her hand for our paddy shake
and I did bring out mine reluctantly and fused our paddy handshake. That kid is
sure gonna be like the mother, "Pure Street breed" like we normally
call her. You really don't wanna know a shit about her. Her husband does the
dishes, cleans the house and does every other work in the house, while she
plays her Ludo game. Worst of it all, the man was also the bread winner of the
house. I kept wondering why he gets bullied that way. He seemed not perturbed
about it anyways. The woman can fight like a bad woman. Before you say jack,
she has already rushed in to wear a short and a nice polo to fight you. She
breaks bottles and does so many unspeakable things that keeps you wondering how
she married such a good man in the first place.
Yeh! back to me. I bid the kid farewell and entered
the church building. It is a gigantic edifice. What more can you expect from a
Catholic building? Mass came to an end after about two hours thirty-five
minutes. Yeah! why are you staring at me with mouth agape? I was really doing
the calculations biko. Who no like life? Come to think of it, I was nervous
even inside the church. I had my eyes at every corner of the church. These guys
might be somewhere around church. Uh! "You wouldn't know". I left the
church and headed straight for my apartment. When I got home, boredom looms
everywhere and Mike was still not at home. I ignored that, went straight to the
kitchen and prepared something for lunch. By the time I was through with my
meal, I switched on my phone which I left on the table before going to the
church. Out of fear, I had to switch off my phone that long to avoid unwanted
and life-threatening calls. I boot the phone and saw a text from an unknown
number. I was nervous at first but I decided to check the SMS. "All die na
die" I said to myself. After all, it’s just a text message. Haba!. The
content of the SMS read thus: “Please I would want to meet you today by 4:00
pm. Come to LINKS HOTELS and meet me at the bar. It’s Mike". Ah! I was
relieved after reading the message because at first, I thought it was from
those guys that kidnapped me and since the day I got kidnapped, I became more
careful while walking on the way and how I receive certain calls. Within me, I
decided to keep the incident to myself. I called Mike’s line to be sure he was
the one that sent me the text but he didn't pick any of my calls. I wasn’t sure
while Mike would send me a text without using his line and besides he hasn’t
for a very long time called me to a bar. "Seemed like he has a new catch
for me to checkout or small money don show for en hand" I thought, and
that was a big relieve for me. I disappointed him the other time he got me a
chick and it seemed like he was really head bent on seeing me with a chick.
"Hmmmm! This friend of mine self" I muttered. At exactly 3:43 pm that
same day, I left the house and made my way to the hotel. Hey! don't look at me
that way. I was cautious of everything. It seemed like my last days on earth.
These Owerri bad guys are too mean. You don't mess with them. This time around,
I no longer stand on the bus stop and wait for cabs, instead, I walk as fast as
I could and enter the nearest cab that comes my way. Owerri automatically
turned to Lagos for me. Even inside the cab, you dare not reach for your pocket
or your suit inner pocket carelessly, I might punch you dead straight. At least
I had 7months boxing program while in school and I fought a lot during my school
days. I was a stubborn guy. So if it was about fighting, I am in and fit
anytime any day. But don't come any close with a gun. I have much respect for
my elders biko. Okay, In 10 minutes time, I arrived at the hotel. It was well
crowded as usual and I was hoping to meet Mike with that big smirk on his face
that signifies what he best describes "The devil's smile". The type
of smirk he usually gives me whenever he brings a new chick to the house and
sends me on an exile. But when I got there, there was no visual on him. His
presence was point black. I sat and waited for him for close to five minutes
and he still wasn’t there. I decided to try his line one more time and this
time around, he responded to my call. “Oboy weti dey work you nah? Why u never
show for here” I asked him. He told me that he left the house in the morning
and won’t be back till evening. Ah!! I told him about the text and that I was
already waiting for him in the bar. Mike was surprised. “I didn’t remember
inviting you to any bar”. Those words shocked me and sent me into a state of
great confusion. I immediately hung up and stood to leave. It seemed like these
guys are playing a fast one at me. "What sort of problem is this?" I
grieved. As I was about leaving, I felt a touch on my shoulder from behind. My
heart skipped and was racing at nearly the speed of light, my blood froze and
my eyes were wide agape. "Ah! could this be my end? I need to say a final
goodbye to my mum "I cried in my heart. I was Seriously fidgeting and I fearfully
turned to see who it was that touched me, but what I saw gave me the shock of
my life. “Jesus!!! Cyn.....Cyn.....Cyn....thia!!! What the hell are you doing
here? What brought you here? Who are you here to see?" I shouted. The fear
in me didn't let realize that the touch was soft before I nearly lost my balls
to fear. "I need to leave now. We shouldn't be seen together" I said
trying to leave.
